Port-o-grant. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a $750,000 grant from the U.S Department of Homeland Security to the Unified Port of San Diego for a new regional communications system, a new boat and consulting services on Wednesday. The funds will buy a new quick-response security boat and consulting services to implement a harbor security plan, along with the new communications system.

Single in the city. San Diego placed 21st on a list released this week of the nation’s best places for singles to live and meet, falling from 13th place last year.

Election Day. San Diego voters will head to the polls Tuesday to vote for a new mayor and decide whether or not the Mt. Soledad cross should be handed over to the federal government.

Middle of the pack.  San Diego was ranked ninth among 19 metropolitan areas in the nation for sustainable competitiveness in a report released Friday by the San Diego Association of Governments.

Base decision. The Base Realignment and Closure board decided Tuesday against adding Marine Corps Recruitment Depot to the targeted base closure list, while adding the Navy’s Broadway Complex to a list of military bases for possible consolidation.

Earth-shakin’. Blasts may be heard for 50 miles as military personnel engage in routine cannon training at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, through Thursday. 

Drills involving 155 mm howitzers will take place around the clock, finishing with several hours of maneuvers involving aircrafts, according to the base’s public affairs office.

Border eyes. Volunteers led by the 58 year-old former Minuteman Jim Chase are expected to show up along a 25-mile, deserted stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border again today to watch for immigrants crossing illegally. Many in the group are expected to be armed.
